Parallel Drawing, at Stortorget, The Malmö City Festival 2013
Parallel Drawing was a workshop which aimed at getting the participants to focus on drawing as physical activity and to reflect on the connection between mental representations and how the body acts during drawing. The workshop wanted to challenge the physical and mental habits and notions as well as the perceived limitations and possibilities of the participants. This was accomplished by influencing the physical conditions and the mental attitudes of the participants while they were drawing.
The materials were felt tip pens, ink, brushes and paper. Most of the exercises were performed by the participants individually. There were also group exercises for two or more participants, where the openness and sensitivity towards the other/others in relation to their own will were examined.
I got the idea for the workshop from the time when I had problems with my right hand, the hand I draw with. I couldn’t use it for a while, so I started drawing with my left hand instead. I noticed how this affected my drawing, not just physically but also mentally. When the right hand got better, I continued to experiment with drawing with both hands, and also created pieces where the hands alternated.
One of these pieces, Drawing with Left and Right Hand, was shown during the Malmö City Festival at Stortorget as a large print on paper (2,4 x 2,4 m). The original drawing is 90 x 84 cm. The drawing is constructed as a figurative Rorschach test. With running ink and a fine pen, the left-hand side of the piece is drawn with the left hand, and the right-hand side with the right.
